Review: Ramon Allones 898 Edicion Regionales 2014 Alemania (Germany)

In 2014 Habanos S.A. released the Ramon Allones 898 as the Regional Edicion cigar for Germany. The 898 is so named because of the way it is packaged in the 25 count box. 3 rows of cigars going 8 then 9 and then 8 on the bottom. Production was limited to only 2,000 numbered boxes.

I was very excited to receive this as a cigar bomb from a very good friend. The box code for this cigar was RAE JUL 15.

Surgeon’s Rating: 93 AKA “A Box Split”

The nose on the Ramon Allones 898 EL Alemania was chocolate and leather with the chocolate taking the lead. Some light cedar was present in the food.

Using a Xikar v-cutter I found the draw to be on the tight side, but still producing satisfying smoke.

My initial flavor impressions are creamy, with trailing leather. On the retrohale very creamy with chocolate. I also start to get some saltiness which only serves to accent the other flavors. As the RA 898 EL settles it reminds me of the mouthfeel of a coffee with a lot of cream in it. The post draw leather steps up to a medium minus and the salt to a light plus as the first third progresses. At the halfway point of the first third some spices come through on the retrohale.

In the middle third the flavor profile doesn’t undergo any changes. The flavors all settle in and balance each other. The strength of this cigar is definitely in the medium plus category and I notice it as it progresses into the final third.

Transitioning into the last third there’s an herbal note that mixes in with the spices from the retrohale. There’s some cedar on the post draw that has a significant drying mouthfeel. At the halfway point of the last third there’s some earthiness coming through at a medium minus. I don’t find any one flavor overpowering the others.

Total smoking time 2 hours and 9 minutes.

If you’re looking for a very complex Cuban cigar with lots of strength, seek out the Ramon Allones 898 Edicion Regionals Alemania.

Surgeon’s Pairing Recommendation:

Cuban coffee and rum would be a no brainer here. I might also go with a bourbon because the pepper would offset the creaminess in the cigar nicely.
