Review: Lou Rodriguez Edición Premier

This Lou Rodriguez Edición Premier has a mottled, dark brown wrapper in a relatively soft, box-press. It has quite a rough exterior from the bunching inside, but the wrapper itself has minimal veins and smooth seams. Although, I can feel various soft mad hard spots throughout. The wrapper smells like a sweet mix of leather & tobacco. The cold draw is effortless, with notes of leather and earth.

Vitola: Robusto

Size: 5x50

Wrapper: San Andres Negro

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

The first third of the Lou Rodriguez Edición Premier starts off with bold flavors, a slight spice and plumes of thick white smoke. The dominant flavor is leather with a smooth black pepper spice. The spice is very noticeable on the retrohale and caught me off guard. As this third ends, a coffee note emerges and shares the stage with the leather and black pepper spice. Bold flavors, nice spice, thick smoke, solid ash and a razor sharp burn. Very impressed so far.

The second third introduces a dark, fruity sweetness to the coffee and leather. The smoke production off this cigar is ridiculous! That's a good thing. This pretty much sums up the entire second third, along with the black pepper spice in the background. And the burn continued to be razor sharp, with a great ash.

In the final third, things start to change up a bit. The sweetness has gone and the coffee has become more bitter, with a leather aftertaste. Probably my least favorite section of this cigar, but it was enjoyable, with all the flavor nuances. Until I got towards the end of the Edición Premier, when, no matter what I tried, I kept getting a strong, bitter taste.

The first two thirds of the Lou Rodriguez Edición Premier were great, and I was definitely impressed. The exterior was lumpy but the construction was spot on and the precise burn and solid ash proved it. The end of the final third was the only disappointing thing about this cigar, and that could very possibly have just been a one-off incident. I would like to thank Lou Rodriguez Cigars for the sample as well, it is appreciated!

Conclusion:

84 - Couple -  - If I was in a shop, I would pick up one or two.

Why such the low rating? Was it the bitterness?

Pretty much. It started out so good, but the last third lost some major points. If the end was better, I might up it to a fiver, but for me it is a couple(er). lol

I think this is the lowest rating I have seen from you, I like it!

lol Yea, it does happen. I've just honestly liked most of what I have reviewed, but if it falls short, I'm not afraid to say so. That's what this is all about.
