This cigar has been out for a few years now and I have been wanting to try it forever. But with so many choices out there, I just kept putting it off. Well, Barry of Miami Cigars was nice enough to supply me with one in a goodie bag at IPCPR this year. And I'll tell you what, I should not have waited so long.
The first thing everyone notices, comments about and/or starts a review with, is the size of the band. So, I don't need to go into much detail, suffice it to say, I love it. I've heard some say it is a deterrent, but for me it is a plus. I really like what it does for the cigar. Now, on to the smoking!
The cigar itself and the cold draw, both had the smell and flavor of tobacco and wood, with slightly sweet undertones. I couldn't put my finger on anything more concise than that. But it was a very pleasant set of smells and flavors, and I was ready to light up.
At first I was not getting anything specific, but then I started to pick up a lot of wood. I eventually narrowed it down to a smokey oak flavor, with a sweet undertone. The smoke production was quite impressive. Effortless draw and plumes of thick, white smoke. The burn was precise and the ash held for just over an inch with no problem.
I never really got many changes in the flavor profile. It was always woody, with a sweet undertone. Although, I did get small black pepper hits now and then, but they were never consistent. It was an excellent smoke to me. The flavors were not complex, but it remained smooth and tasty the entire length. That means more to me than flavor changes, because I was able to enjoy the entire cigar without any bitter notes. Not to mention flawless construction that allowed me to enjoy the cigar, without having to touchup burns or relight.
I know most of you may have tried this cigar already, but whether you have or haven't, definitely give it a(nother) try. I will be purchasing some to store in my humidor soon!
