Released at the IPCPR 2016 in Las Vegas, the La Galera Maduro joins a portfolio that already includes Connecticut and Habano wrappers. Owned by Jochy Blanco, they are rolled out of the Tabacalera Palma factory out of the Dominican Republic.
The La Galera Maduro is offered in six vitolas: Vitola No. 1 (3-1/2x50), Pegador (6x46), Chaveta (5x50), Cabeza Caracol (7-1/4x50), Cortador (6-1/4x52), and El Lector (6x54).
Check out my video review here:
The nose on the La Galera Maduro is a wonderful cedar, rich earthiness that are both subtle. Some sweetness and more intense cedar out of the foot.
Initial impressions are light cedar, light chocolate with underlying creaminess. The draw is perfect. On the retrohale I find myself struggling to describe all the rich spices and creaminess. The spices continue to build in intensity as the first third starts to settle in, with some post draw pepper joining in. Some bitter earthiness appears for a short time, and after a purge it seems to disappear. The pepper on the post draw starts to fall in intensity to a medium strength.
Some intense sweetness comes through to push the spices and pepper aside, while at the same time bringing the chocolate flavors up in intensity.
As the cigar approaches the middle third I’m really starting to notice the strength of this cigar. There are some citrus notes that come and go as the La Galera transitions here. The citrus is more distinct on the retrohale.
The middle third starts to establish itself and the cedar notes come back, the chocolate falls down to light along with the sweetness. The sweetness is dominant on the retrohale, with the pepper coming back on the post draw. As the middle third settles in some earthiness mixes in to add to the overall flavor complexity. The chocolate notes start to come back on the retrohale, creating a nice balance against the cedar.
As the La Galera Maduro moves into the last third most of the flavors take on this toasted quality. A combination of earth, and nuts on the retrohale, with some chocolate, and earthy flavors on the regular draw.
Total smoking time 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The La Galera Maduro El Lector is an excellent cigar, and if you enjoy Dominican tobacco you’re going to want to head to your local B&M and snap these up.
