Prelight: The wrapper has a pleasant aroma of fermented tobacco, soil, wood, and some cocoa notes. While, the foot has notes of wood, red pepper, and bread. Bread and granulated white sugar notes are dominant on the cold draw with a little cedar and pepper on the finish.

Beginning: Right off the bat, the Primitivo is very tasty with a creamy, semi-sweet bread note. This cigar is very smooth, with a creamy mouth-feel, and a nice finish. There is a smokey sweetness, that’s like a smoke finished, granulated white sugar. It’s not overly sweet or overly spicy, just a perfect balance. The burn is dead on, with a tight ash and an easy going medium strength and body.

Middle: The second third of the Primitivo continues in a similar fashion. The main note is that white sugar flavor, which I can best describe as that of eating a sugar cube. Don’t pretend like you’ve never done that… There is a dull sweetness, a light smokiness, and a creamy finish. The burn is still razor sharp with a tight ash that holds on for around half an inch. The strength and body are still an easy medium.

End:  The final third starts out similar to the preceding two thirds, with that white sugar flavor, but it does start to change up a little. The smokiness picks up and a slight black pepper note shows up. It isn’t strong and is mainly on the finish, but it is there now. The Primitivo ends smoothly and nicely. And smokes easily to a nub. It remains a medium strength and body cigar at best, from start to finish, and burns without fail.

Final Thoughts: The Primitivo from La Barba is a bit of a one note ride, but don’t take that as a bad thing. I enjoyed this cigar immensely from start to finish. I would reach for this cigar a lot and am sure that I will pick up more soon. I mean seriously. Anything that can be nubbed like this is big time winner. This is a minimum box split all day, but I would, without a doubt…
