Prelight: This Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper gives a strong punch to the senses. Lots of tobacco spice tingle the nostrils, with strong notes of dirt and earth up front and some hay and cedar aromas in the background. The foot has a similar profile, but with the addition of a sweet, fudge from the filler. The spice from the wrapper doesn’t come through on the cold draw, surprisingly. Lots of dry cedar and hay combine with some sweet tobacco notes and a touch of white pepper.
Smoking: Right off the bat I notice the fudge note from the foot as the mouth-feel is thick and creamy, but only slightly sweet. A few puffs in I notice the spice come into play, with cream and a sweet hay flavor on the finish. There is also a lemon icing type flavor, that reminds me of a soft lemon cookie.
The second third is a nice mix of smooth creaminess and light, tongue tingling spice. The draw and exhale are smooth, thick and creamy with notes of hay, wood and a touch of lemon. While the finish is a tad dry with a pepper spice tingle, making a nice combo.
In the final third, the creamy notes fade out. The profile becomes dry and stronger, with a mostly spicy, woody note.
Construction: The construction on this beast was very good. The Gigantes burned straight, even and solidly from start to finish. No relights either, so no complaints in this department for me.
Final Thoughts: Large ring gauges are a hit or miss game. I do not gravitate towards them, but I usually find that they are enjoyable. Minus the amount of time it takes to smoke something of this size, as I rarely have this much time to relax and smoke. Would I turn this cigar down? No, I would smoke another one anytime, given enough free time. That being said, I'd buy a fiver and keep some on hand, but wouldn't need many with how slowly I'd be able to go through them.
