Review: Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.1

HDM Epicure No.1 (Feb.2007)

Wrapper: Medium Claro

Origin: Cuba

1st 1/3:

Right out of the gate this cigar was medium-full in strength, medium body with a strong nutty and earth taste.

Through the retro-hale it had a spice that was almost unbearable (not normal for the Hoyo profile). For a Hoyo with 7+ years of age on it, it was very strong.

2nd 1/3:

Still very nutty but now there is some citrus (orange peel) coming through and a tangy wood flavor. The retro is still way to spicy for me and I smoke all my cigars with a 50/50 mouth/nose ratio. The draw is tight but not uncomfortable and the burn is absolutely perfect. Ash is snow white.

3rd 1/3:

The body is full and so is the strength. The earth now over powers the nut and the tangy wood is at the fore. Spice is picking up a lot. Very nice and cool burn, draw a little tight but nice, and strong for a Hoyo.

I would give this cigar a 89-90, even though it has 7 years a few more would bring it up to 90+ for sure.

I will be smoking a Cohiba Robusto from April 2010 next.

Thanks for reading,

I love Hoyo, and to me it seems Habanos in general get stronger at that 5-7 year mark.  Not so much in body, but more in distinction of flavors man.  Great review, thanks for the writeup.

I liked the review but I don't see them as strong as you say, If they were from 2008 , I would say, right !!!!,

but they are not from that year,B.T.W. this cigar Is my "Go to cigar" that I smoke everyday. Before 2008, they

were very honey-ish and less earthy then they are today. But still a fantastic cigar .Thank you for the great review.
