Another cigar in the Godzilla sampler pack, the Gurkja Ninja XO is described as a medium-full bodied cigar.
The Gurkha Ninja is sold in 20 count boxes and the vitolas options are Knife (Robusto, 5x55), Torpedo (6x52), XO (Gordo, 6x60), Perfecto #2 (6x60), or a Churchill (7x50).
Check out my video review here:
The nose on the Gurkha Ninja XO is strong leather with some spicy cedar underneath it. In the foot there’s a sweetness, almost a honey and grass combination.
The draw is in the ideal zone.
Initial flavors are a sweet spice, and some dark chocolate notes. Some leather starts to come through on the post draw after a delay. The retrohale is a spicy cedar but quite subdued at a light plus strength. As the firs third settles in I’m getting some green cedar post draw, along with some pepper and spices. The pepper starts out light and builds up to a medium level. On the retrohale there’s a honey sweetness that’s quite intense and tends to dominate the retrohale. The retrohale profile develops some spice to balance out that sweetness.
As the first third winds down, the honey sweetness steps back up in intensity almost drowning out all the flavors, including those on the post draw. As the Gurkha Ninja transitions to the middle third some cedar flavors show up. Once the middle third settles in, the post draw pepper and spices have now replaced all of the leather notes. I do notice the leather as a light flavor if I wait for some time between draws.
In the last third the honey sweetness has fallen all the way back down to light, as have the pepper and spices on the post draw. The cedar that was so subtle in the middle third has taken over the post draw completely. I’m recognizing how strong this cigar is at this point. At the end of the draw I’m also now getting some earthy flavors mixing in with the cedar. As the final third winds down there’s a smoky barbeque flavor that carries in to the post draw and mixes in.
Total smoking time 2 hours and 7 minutes.
The Gurkha Ninja XO really hit its stride in the middle third. I found it to be an enjoyable cigar, which is remarkable given that I typically do not enjoy larger ring gauge offerings.
I will be seeking out a 5’er of this in one of the other vitola offerings.
Surgeon’s Pairing Recommendation:
As the Gurkha Ninja XO is a medium-full bodied cigar a coke or Dr. Pepper would be a great choice here. I could also see a sherried scotch or bourbon pairing well also.
