Evil Genius Cigars debuted at the 2014 IPCPR with two blends. A couple weeks ago I reviewed the White Chapel. This was a new brand to me, until meeting them this year in New Orleans and finally smoking the White Chapel. On to the smoke!

Pre-light: Deep leathery fermented tobacco off the wrapper. The foot has an almost apple-like sweetness to it. The cold draw has a very nice, raw, pressed apple cider flavor. Interesting notes here, and I am ready to see how these flavors burn.

Beginning: The Evil Genius Black Chapel starts out very nicely. There is that natural, creamy sweetness that I expect from a maduro. There is also just the slightest amount of a very dark cocoa in the background. The finish is medium, with a dark, leathery molasses sweetness, but it is very mellow. Great burn and solid ash…loving it so far.

Middle: The middle of the Black Chapel continues with the creamy, maduro profile to start with. But then it becomes a bit more spicy/bitter. Some of this may be due to the fact that I have to smoke the Black Chapel a little more aggressively here. The oily, dark tobacco is somewhat tough to keep lit. But it does continue to burn and maintain a flavorful profile.

End: The Black Chapel ends, by continuing a very tasty profile. The main body is a strong oak and leather mix, with a slightly spicy finish.

Final Thoughts: I definitely enjoyed this cigar quite a bit more than I did the White Chapel. I love maduros, so that isn't too big of a surprise. The surprise to me, simply based on the looks and the band colors, was that the White Chapel was dramatically stronger than the Black Chapel. Just a mind game, based on color, I'm sure. Either way, this is a great cigar, especially if you are in the colder climates, where you need a short smoke.
