Review: Drew Estate Liga Privada Unico Serie L40

Drew Estate is a cigar manufacturer that most people have heard of. With a significant social media presence, they’ve consistently placed on the top cigars and top manufacturer’s for several consecutive years.

The Unico Serie of cigars which includes the UF-13, Dirty Rat, Feral Flying Pig, and L40 are a premium line. The L40 was first announced in the 2011 IPCPR, and the name comes from a combination of the vitola and the ring gauge.

The Liga Privada Unico Serie L40 comes in a single vitola as a 7” x 40 lancero. They are sold in singles or 15 count boxes. Production is extremely limited and inventory is sold out almost immediately when it does become available.

Overall Cigar Federation Average Review: 88 AKA “5-Pack”

“This review only serves to solidify the Liga Privada Unico Serie L40 as my favorite of the entire Drew Estate Unico Serie line.”

Surgeon’s Rating: 88 AKA “5-Pack”

The nose on the Liga Privada Unico Serie L40 is pepper, cedar and a sweet molasses. The smell reminds me of travelling to Nicaragua and enjoying cigars by the pool.

The cold draw is fermented tobacco, the sweet molasses, and the faintest hints of hay. I used a v-cut and the draw was right in the acceptable range.

The first few draws start out like the cold draw, with balanced components of pepper, sweetness, and some faint leather that’s barely detectable. I find an almost honey taste lingering on my tongue, along with faint leather after each draw. The smoke has a light airy mouthfeel like whipping cream. On the retrohale the profile is far more prominently pepper which lingers at the back of my throat.

The cedar notes in the first third tend to overpower the pepper in the second third. The sweetness is still there and the pepper starts to wane throughout the second third.

The last third toggles between leather and cedar and I smoke the L40 right down to the nub.

Total smoking time was 1 hour 27 minutes.

This review only serves to solidify the Liga Privada Unico Serie L40 as my favorite of the entire Drew Estate Unico Serie line. The UF-13 would be a close second, but if I had to choose between boxes the L40 would win every time. Although I rated this cigar as a 5-Pack according to our system, I would not hesitate to grab a box of these due to their rarity.

If you’re already a fan of the Unico Serie line the L40 is almost certainly going to be in your wheel house. If you haven’t tried many of the Unico Serie cigar releases, and you’re looking for a sweet and peppery cigar, the L40 will not disappoint.

Pairing Recommendation:

Bourbon, aged rum, a Dr. Pepper. The L40 is going to be pretty easy to pair with a variety of beverages that have full body to them.

I've never had this one. I did enjoy the UF-13 a great bit though, so I'll keep an eye out for it.

I prefer the UF-13, due to it having a sweeter profile than the other Unicos, and when taking value into account, I'm totally on board with an 88.  They are nice, but not trip over myself to spend $15+ or more on them very often.

I love L40's (94/100 imo) the 3 unopened boxes in my humidor proves that. I love  Unicos, thought these were my favorite blend until I smoked this years Ratzilla! Get some DE4L!

Nice review.  I may be  the only Cfed'r that doesn't love lanceros but they just don't do it for me.  I thought the L40 was good but I wouldn't pay the asking for em.  The 1 I have left will likely be given to a friend.

Oh btw...the L40 only has Nicaraguan filler ;-)

L40 is an easy 95+ for me.  Love this cigar.

I agree with you for sure Matt! Same with the Ratzilla 94-95 and the Dirty Rat is a 93....

My rating scale is a bit different than the one you guys use but very similar.....

I would smoke one again, but it's definitely my least favorite of the Unico Serie, I would never seek them out again but I do have one left over,
