Review: Kinky Friedman Lone Star No. 4

Originally launched in 2006 by Kinky Friedman himself, these cigars are now discontinued as of last year.  They were made by Oliveros at their factory and contained two different lines, Classic and Lone Star.

The band sports a silhouette of Kinky Friedman with a scenic portrayal of the Texas desert on each side.  Below him to the left and right are the words "Texas Series" and below that "Lone Star".  It also has two images of the country, I mean state, of Texas on each side of the top. You can't get much more Texas than this folks.  Well, unless it sported a silhouette of Logan, shirtless, holding a shotgun and a can of Lone Star beer but I digress, 'Merica.

The wrapper is very rough looking, but then again Kinky has always been a little rough around the edges himself.  Pre-light draw reveals cocoa but not much else.  It is wide open, much more than I would prefer actually.

The first third starts off slightly bitter.  I pick up some cedar on the retrohale as well as dark woody flavors.  Baking spice also joins the mix.  The overall profile is smooth but I expected this given the age of the cigar as it spent around two years in my humidor.

Into the second third the experience stays the same with dark woody flavors that are coupled with baking spice and hints of cedar on the retrohale.  The burn line has needed multiple touch ups as has been quite the nuisance.

At the first part of this third the cigar becomes more harsh.  I am only picking up on the cedar at this point.  It becomes unenjoyable, as I do not particularly like a heavy cedar profile, so I let it go out.

Overall, this was a pretty good stick.  It deteriorated towards the end but before that I was really enjoying it.  The fact that the price averages around $2 makes them a real bargain if you can find them on closeout.

I would recommend everyone try a 5er, it rates an 88/100
