With the Federal Government's shutdown over, and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) back at work, Icarus Brewing Company in Lakewood, NJ is back to releasing some fun, new beers.
On Monday, Icarus announced their collaboration with Bolero Snort - There's Always Money in the Bullnana Stand. On their Facebook post announcing the release, Icarus wrote:
Inspired by our mutual favorite dysfunctional family's Chocolate Covered Banana stand this Russian Imperial Stout was brewed with overwhelming amounts of oats, barley, cocoa powder, cocoa nibs, and wildflower honey then fermented using a blend of our house yeast and a traditional German Hefeweizen yeast to bring out subtle banana esters. The result is a big rich chocolatey stout featuring notes of banana and weighing in at 10.3% abv ( this one might require two sticks!) You can call this one a GOB if you want but just don't forget, There's Always Money in the Bullnana Stand!
In addition to Bullnana, we've also learned that Icarus will be releasing Licking Toads. Licking Toads is a 6% Brux American Pale Ale. When we spoke to Jason Goldstein, owner and head brewer at Icarus, he told us, "Licking Toads is a Northeast Style Pale Ale we fermented with Saccharomyces "Brux" Trois. We decided to test out a bunch of new things on the beer and loving the results including completely subbing wheat out of our Pale Ales for Spelt (a type of wheat we use in Spelt Check) as well as Zeus hops for its pungent sweet Citrus and light resin and Experimental 06297 hops which we're quickly falling in love with for its Stone Fruit, Peach, and Blueberry flavors."
When we commented to Goldstein our love for the Licking Toads label, he agreed noting, "Makes me want to keep doing more brux beers if we're going to keep doing trippy labels for them."
When asked about preparing for another government shutdown, Goldstein told us, "Think we have 20 labels submitted already Pending. Government shut down gave us the fear of god as we had to go through our backlog and change up brew schedules to make things work."
Both new can offerings will be available in the Icarus Taproom on Wednesday 2/6, and in limited distribution around the state.
