Booze News: Carton versus Stillwater Artisanal, Mix Tap Vol. 2

According to a filing with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), Carton Brewing, based in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, received approval on July 11th in Connecticut for a can label for Stay Down!

According to the can label, Stay Down is a 4.0% ABV, 22 IBU Dry-Hopped Black Session Lager that will be brewed and canned at the Two Roads Brewery in Stratford, Connecticut. To understand Stay Down, however, you must understand some backstory.

Carton Brewing put itself on the map in 2011 with Boat Beer, a 4.2% ABV Session Ale that owner Augie Carton has detailed as not only his "perfect beer", but the reason Carton Brewing started in the first place.  Boat quickly gained critical acclaim across the marketplace and beer drinkers worldwide. Four years later, nomadic brewery Stillwater Artisanal debuted Yacht, a dry-hopped session lager, and many immediately saw an affront to the Carton and Boat brands.

Rather than fight this in the courts, or even the courts of public opinion, in somewhat typical Carton fashion, Augie took a different approach.  Stillwater is headed by Brian "Stillwater" Strumke, a former internationally renowned techno DJ so Augie responded reminiscent of the great rap battles of yesteryear - he debuted his own Mix Tape in response.

In late October 2015, Carton debuted Sit Down Son, its own 4.0% ABV, 22 IBU Dry-Hopped Session Lager in conjunction with New Hampshire's Smuttynose Brewing Company.  This was quickly followed up in response by Stillwater Artisanal who, in January 2016, released Give-Way - a Session IPA in conjunction with Louisville, Kentucky's Against The Grain Brewery & Smokehouse.  The following month, can art was leaked of Stay Down, but the beer has not officially been released to this point.  Now, over 2 years later, it appears we might be seeing Carton's Mix Tap Volume 2 hit the streets!

When we reached out to Carton Brewing for details, we were directed to this New Jersey Craft Beer article.
