A fond farewell

Gentlemen, it is time that I move on from my time writing as a cigar reviewer and participating as a moderator on Cigar Federation, What Embargo, and Habanos Critic. Due to professional obligations, it is in my best interests to step away from the cigar industry as a reviewer, commentator, and general fan of all things wrapped in Connecticut leaf. I discussed this with Logan and Seth briefly a few weeks ago, and wanted to take the time to let you all…

Cigar News: Alan Fonseca returns with Salamanca Cigar Group

The Don has returned! Alan Fonseca, formerly of Ezra Zion, has come out with his own brand, the Salamanca Cigar Group. I can tell you from hanging out with him, he has been working hard on his new brand for quite some time. I have been lucky enough to sample many of his new and upcoming releases, and they have all been fantastic, with flavors appealing to all palates. For his initial release, the Salamanca Cigar Group has two brands, Joseph NicaVana, and Glandon Family. The…

Review: Lost and Found Swollen Cock

It seems that Lost and Found is all the rage these days, prying old cigars out of factories and rereleasing them to the public with slick marketing tactics and names that bring attention to the consumer. For instance, as I am writing this review, I have a cock in my hand. Not just any cock mind you, a Swollen Cock, one of the latest releases from Lost and Found, sent to me by Logan to give my thoughts on. Before I begin the review, I must say that the response to these releases seems to be…

Review: Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Añejados (SOA SEP08)

The new Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Añejados and Montecristo Churchill lines from Habanos SA seems to be a very polarizing release according to initial feedback.  When these were announced back in December, the whole Habanos world seemed to have an opinion on whether or not the line was legitimately aged, worth the predicted retail prices, and just what exactly Habanos was thinking with a release like this.  Tuna and I discussed the topic on one of our shows, and to me I felt it showed…

Review: Juan Lopez Petite Corona (2013)

Orale Juan Lopez! Arguably the most underrated regular production smokes on the market, Seth and I are huge fans of the Juan Lopez Marca. For some reason the Juan Lopez Petite Coronas always seemed to be on the backburner for me, as so many other petite coronas and minutes dominated my humidors. I finally made it a point to seek one out via trade, specifically for review. I am not positive of the date code, but I know the cigar came from a 2013 box. The Juan Lopez brand only…

Review: Pre-Release Ohana Friends and Family Habana Rosado Toro

Recently I was turned on to a newer brand, looking to make a splash in 2015 with two releases out of Nicaragua known as Ohana.  Ohana is the brand, Ryan Rodriguez is the owner, and the cigars are being made at Plasencia with some seriously aged tobaccos. Rodriguez has two blends he is releasing March 21st at UG Fest, the first annual cigar festival put on by Underground Cigar Shop and Lounge in Fort Worth, Texas. The Friends and Family blend was the first cigar I…

Review: Cohiba Robustos Supremos Edicion Limitada 2014 Catfish Edition

You saw Seth's take, now you get mine!  All in anticipation for our upcoming show on Tuesday!

Woot woot!

Bigger is better, and so goes the evolution of Cuban cigars into the world of large ring gauges, with the introduction of the Cohiba Robustos Supremos Edicion Limitada 2014. For the purpose of being…

Review: Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH Exclusive 2012

A cigar that keeps haunting my friendly neighborhood LCDH surfing, is the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe La Casa del Habano (LCDH) Exclusivo release from 2012.  Noted by the secondary band bearing the LCDH logo, Habanos SA has released very few cigars in this vein, and as of 2011 limited production.  Employing aged tobacco, the releases are not quite on the level of the Edicion Limitadas in terms of price, but are exclusive, and have some collectability in that regard…

Review: Ramon Allones Superiores LCDH Exclusivo Grand Corona

Ramon Allones, the brand I want to love, kind of love, yet never seem to go deep on.  I placed a thread in the Cigar Cartel Group to see what members wanted me to review, and the overwhelming choice was the Ramon  Allones LCDH Superiores Grand Corona release.  Generally, I am a corona gorda whore, so my expectation was high going in. I am not sure of the box code or date, but I am pretty sure it came from the 2012-13 MUR codes, as I got it from a good BOTL…

Cigar of the Year 2014: Catfish

Well gents and ladies, it is time to post our individual Cigar of the Year 2014 lists!  This year I decided to stay at 20, as honestly I had a ton of graet smokes that I truly loved this year. Some were reviewed, some were not, and I am only posting pictures for the first five.  Really the majority of this list was released in 2013 or 2014, as it truly does take forever to get to all samples and cigars I buy.  So without further adieu my Cigar of the Year 2014 is……

Catfish's Top Five Habanos of the Year

I you had not heard, Seth, Surgeon, and myself are all getting together to discuss our top rated Habanos of the year this Saturday on What Embargo.  In doing so, we all made short lists to discuss live.  Here is a snippet of mine...

It is time for a Top Five Habanos Cigar of the Year list for Habanos Critic and What Embargo.  I wanted to keep the list short, as truly you could add any handmade Habanos to my list, as they all are made with superior tobacco.  So for this…

Review: Trinidad Robusto T 2010

I had the pleasure of winning a contest sponsored by Cigar Inspector, that involved a nice package from LCDH Knokke in Belgium including a Trinidad Robusto T. This specific vitola has been discontinued since 2012, and the example sent to me had a secondary aged band noting the year of release as 2010. I am not a huge Trinidad fan, as for the most part they need significant age to hit my palate, but I am always game to try something new. The brand itself is a niche brand,…

Review: Bolivar Belicosos Finos 2003

With all the recent hoopla, I am kind of on a collecting spree, but specifically for long term aging. I plan on shifting my focus on smoking to mostly Non-Cuban cigars, other than my weekly review. I plan on aging more boxes during the coming year, so I am visiting some older favorites to determine my route. I have always been a fan of Bolivar Belicosos Finos (BBF), and picked up a fine aged example in a trade from 2003. I figured it was time to really see what time had…

Review: Crux Classic Marble Head Toro

If you have not noticed, Crux is really making the rounds this year and coming out of the gate as a strong new boutique company.  I have been reviewing for almost four years now, and every year as I get more engrained in the process, I find it to be rather watered down.  New companies pop up every month, and for me, it takes a lot to get me excited about a brand or new release, because so many of these boutiques taste the same or end up underwhelming.  Jared made a point to…

Review: Por Larrañaga Legendarios Edición Regional España 2012

Recently I had a rather divine experience with the Por Larrañaga Encantos, which kind of threw me for a loop.  Every Por Larrañaga I had smoked prior did not settle well with me.  However, the Encantos got me intrigued on the Regional releases, and I had received a Legendarios as a gift with it from my good friend Guy in France. The Legendarios is much bigger, a double robusto that looks larger then a 50 ring gauge. The Spanish market released the size in 2012 in dress…

Pre-Release Review: Cubanacan HR

Anyone who knows anything about tobacco knows the Godfather of Cuban tobacco is Alejandro Robaina. Make no mistake, his impact on the world of cigars is prevalent all over the industry outside of the fabled island to this day. Now his grandson Hirochi is taking the family name one-step further, stepping outside of Cuba and releasing a cigar from Nicaragua.  Hirochi worked alongside his grandfather for 14 years, and took over the day-to-day duties of the farm when he passed away in 2010. …

Review: Ramon Allones Small Club Corona 2012

You know that cigar…  The one everyone loves, always raves about, and is always on your list to buy but when the funds come around you never seem to grab it?  That is the Ramon Allones Small Club Corona (RASCC) for me.  I cannot tell you how many times I have considered buying these, as I generally enjoy all things Ramon.  Finally, after years of thinking it over, one happened to find its way into my wineador.  After a week or so of rest and some habanero fajitas,…

Review: Mystery Habanos #1 and #2 with What Embargo and Blind Man's Puff

A while back I had an idea to get something different going on for Habanos Critic and What Embargo.  I know Aaron over at Blind Man's Puff (BMP) always sends out smokes to the reviewers for that site, so I wanted to turn the tables and get stuff sent to him.  I also wanted to do something unique for a show, and have the reveal done live with the guys on air. So I contacted a long time friend associated with BMP and set my idea in motion, with Aaron, Emmett, Seth, and I all getting two…

Review: Vegueros Mañanitas Petite Pyramide (MAT MAY14)

For well over a year now, folks like myself have been waiting patiently for the rebranding of the Vegueros line from Habanos SA to hit your local neighborhood LCDH.  On my most recent world travels through the friendly neighborhood, some of the new Vegueros Mañanitas made their way into my humidor.  The Mañanitas are a petite pyramide, and this size was the one that tickled my fancy as I gazed upon the press release from Habanos a while back.  I also love tins for…

Review: Montecristo Petite Edmundo

Montecristo is a brand I tend to have a love hate relationship with historically.  I gave a lot of praise to the No 2 in the past on one of our shows, but I also was not much of a fan of that vitola for quite some time.  I also have not had great experiences with the smaller ring gauges.  However, one vitola has always been a humidor staple, and I figured it was time to finally review it, the Petite Edmundo.  When I first got into Habanos, I was all about small…
