Review: Cubariqueno Probable Cause Lancero

When Cubariqueno released the original Probable Cause in 2016 it was a divisive cigar among the Cigar Federation mods. I was a big fan of the powdered cocoa that the San Andres Maduro wrapper brought to the flavor profile.

When Juan Cancel told me they had a Lancero in the works, I was ecstatic to get my hands on it. Although the vitola is still a true lancero at 7-1/2”x38 RG, they’ve added a new twist by box pressing it.

This may be the longest stretch I’ve had a…

Review: Macanudo Inspirado Black

Released at the 2017 IPCPR, the Macanudo Inspirado Black is one half of a pair. The other being the Macanudo Inspirado White, but I will leave that one for another day. I missed getting to try this cigar at IPCPR this year, but I was able to enjoy most of an Inspirado Black during a visit to the General Cigar Co. farms in Connecticut. While walking through the fields of Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco plants, in Connecticut, I smoked a larger vitola of this cigar and was amazed.…

Review: Black Works Studio Boondock Saint Corona Larga

The goal of Black Works is to showcase Nicaraguan tobaccos with small…

Review: Southern Draw Rose of Sharon

Earlier in the year I had the opportunity to smoke a number of the Rose of Sharon release from Southern Draw Cigars. That initial release sold through, and a 2nd release was debuted at the IPCPR.

The Rose of Sharon was a release dedicated to Robert’s wife:

“Much like a Rose, Sharon exemplifies our brand with her beautiful soul, humility and a “subtle” boldness which has…

Review: Partagas 1845 Classico Robusto

General Cigar originally launched the Partagas 1845 in 2012.  In 2014, the Classico was joined by 2 more lines, the Extra Fuerte, and Extra Oscuro.  At IPCPR 2017, General relaunched all 3 frontmarks, with updated packaging, and all new blends.  Today, we’ll be focusing on the Partagas 1845 Classico.

Brand: Partagas 1845 Classico…

Review: Protocol Themis Toro

"Not your father's Connecticut" is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot these days.  For a long time, a Connecticut Shade wrapper was indicative of a milder, mellower cigar, and many veteran cigar smokers viewed it as a sign of an entry-level cigar.  In the past 10 years or so, the medium-full range has been the primary focus for most consumers, and therefore has been the first priority for manufacturers, old or new.  About 3 years ago, this started to change,…

Review: Muestra de Saka Exclusivo

The latest release from Steve Saka's Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust is a bit different than his previous offering in terms of it's presentation, blend, and price point.  The Exclusivo is the first in the Muestra de Saka series, which Steve describes as "a line of individual batch produced cigars. Each cigar within the line is a unique vitola and liga - no two are the same. Their taste, body, strength, materials, etc. will vary widely. As will…

Cigar Review: AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro

The first Last Call started out as one of those great projects which was just an internal house blend handed out to guests who were over watching football. As per the namesake, this was the last cigar handed out to close the evening.

Originally launched in the single Geniales (4-1/2x48) vitola, a line extension was announced late 2016 adding on Pequeñas (5x46), Corticas (4x52), Flaquitas (6x46), and a Chiquitas (3-1/2x50).

Review: Crux Limitada Show Exclusive IPCPR 2016

This years Limitada is a new vitola in the same blend as 2015's PB5. The biggest difference is that the IPCPR 2016 wasn't available to just anyone. It was only available to retailers who attended the show and made an order of $1000 or more. So, this makes it hard to get production numbers and makes availability spotty.

Review: Black Works Studio Bishops Blend (2016)

Black Works Studio was opened up under Black Label Trading Company with the goal of “developing unique blends highlighting Nicaraguan tobacco”. To that end James Brown blended the Bishops Blend in 2016 to be a rich and intense experience.

Released in two vitolas, and 20 count boxes, available as a Corona Larga (6-1/4x46) or Robusto (5x48). Production was limited to just 150 boxes of each vitola for 300 total boxes.

It landed as my…
