The Happy New Year Roberto P. Duran and Assorted Goodies Contest!

I’m sure you’re all tired of cigar giveaways by now, but Jack Toraño at Roberto P. Duran Cigars wanted to get in on the 12SDoCG, and I was full up! Also, I had some extra goodies around that I wanted to find a good home for, so the winner of this event will receive two  shipments, the cigars from Roberto P. Duran in Florida, and one from me.  I’m also going to try out something new (to me), using RaffleCopter to picke my winner.  I’ve included several ways to enter, the usual “leave a…

Top Reviewed Non-Cuban Cigars for 2014

Last year I found myself struggling to list the best cigars over the past year.  With many opportunities to smoke some great products, cigars appearing earlier in the year ended up fading in my memory by the time December rolled around.   This year I wanted to do something different and have a running ranked list based purely on my subjective enjoyment of each cigar.

Review: Partagás 8-9-8 (Varnished 8-9-8)

At one time, for a little over 20 years, a lover of Habanos could have the option of choosing between two 8-9-8s. While both somewhat similar in vitola offering, one is a little longer than the other, the big difference was in the…

My Top Cigars of 2014

When I created the Cigar Federation Top New Releases of 2014 list, I didn't include my own list.  I wanted to have no bias whatsoever in the creation of the list so I took everyone's list, compiled that into what you've seen, and left mine out.  However, now that we've shared our group list, and since I have the platform here to present my list, and most importantly because my list varies greatly from…

To’Makao Fine Cigars and Goose’s Tobacco Outlet and Cafe

It’s been a while since my last normal post.  The two weeks of contests was great, I hope everyone enjoyed winning and having the chance to win a lot of great cigars. Thanks again to all the sponsors!  One of the great things about these contests is when someone reasonably local wins.  I had two such opportunities this year, the first on Day 1.  This saved me postage and allowed me to meet a reader and visit a new store. Adam won the Gurkha goodies, and I met him at To’Makao Fine…

Review: Bolivar Belicosos Finos 2003

With all the recent hoopla, I am kind of on a collecting spree, but specifically for long term aging. I plan on shifting my focus on smoking to mostly Non-Cuban cigars, other than my weekly review. I plan on aging more boxes during the coming year, so I am visiting some older favorites to determine my route. I have always been a fan of Bolivar Belicosos Finos (BBF), and picked up a fine aged example in a trade from 2003. I figured it was time to really see what time had…

Review: Crux Classic Marble Head Toro

If you have not noticed, Crux is really making the rounds this year and coming out of the gate as a strong new boutique company.  I have been reviewing for almost four years now, and every year as I get more engrained in the process, I find it to be rather watered down.  New companies pop up every month, and for me, it takes a lot to get me excited about a brand or new release, because so many of these boutiques taste the same or end up underwhelming.  Jared made a point to…

Cigar Federation Top New Releases of 2014: #1 Crowned Heads Jericho Hill

As we near the end of 2014, you will begin to see many "Top" lists throughout the cigar community.  In keeping with tradition, each of the main reviewers on the site - Logan, Rob, Dustin, Jerad and John - has their own list, but we also wanted to see what a Cigar Federation group list would look like.

Unlike last year where I gave the guys no direction, we've changed it up a bit this year.  Each reviewer was asked to provide 3 lists:

  1. Top Brands of 2014 (more on that…

COVERING YOUR ASH: SINDICATO MADURO

Back in June we reviewed the Sindicato, the flagship release from Sindicato Cigars, a company formed by a group of retailers with the sole intention of putting retailers and consumers first. Today we take a look at the Sindicato Maduro, released back in October of this year. The Maduro joins its Natural…

Review: Por Larrañaga Legendarios Edición Regional España 2012

Recently I had a rather divine experience with the Por Larrañaga Encantos, which kind of threw me for a loop.  Every Por Larrañaga I had smoked prior did not settle well with me.  However, the Encantos got me intrigued on the Regional releases, and I had received a Legendarios as a gift with it from my good friend Guy in France. The Legendarios is much bigger, a double robusto that looks larger then a 50 ring gauge. The Spanish market released the size in 2012 in dress…

Review: Crux Ninfamaniac Dark

I reviewed the Crux Ninfamaniac Natural a few months back, and it got a 96, my highest rating to date. So, the natural progression would be to get a review done of the Dark version. Again, I just love the look and feel of this little cigar! The closed foot, perfecto shape and lancero size are win-win. The only difference on the dark version is Sungrown Habano Jalapa wrapper, which brings the strength level up into the "full" range.…

Review: Camacho Ecuador

It's been awhile now since Camacho rebranded themselves as the "Bold Standard" and the Camacho Ecuador is the one I wanted to smoke the most.  So, naturally, it is the first one I will review. The Ecuador is a new addition to the Camacho line.  It was released earlier this year and, unlike the Triple Maduro, Corojo, etc., it was not a revamp of a previous line.…
